Requirements

  • Grade 1: Experience: No experience after registration with the Health Profession Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as an ultra-sonographer in respect of RSA qualified employee who performed Community Service as required in South Africa. 1-year relevant experience after registration with HPCSA in respect of foreign qualified employees.
  • Grade 2: Experience: A minimum of 10 years appropriate /recognisable experience after registration with HPCSA as an ultra-sonographer in respect of RSA qualified employees who performed community Service. 11 years’ experience after registration with HPCSA in respect of foreign qualified employees.
  • Grade 3: Experience: A minimum of 20 years appropriate /recognisable experience after registration with HPCSA as an ultra-sonographer in respect of RSA qualified employees who performed Community Service. 21 years’ experience after registration with HPCSA in respect of foreign qualified employees of whom it is not required to perform Community Service as required in South Africa.
  • Grade 12/ Senior Certificate.
  • Degree/ National Diploma in Ultrasound.
  • Current registration with HPCSA as Sonographer.
  • Knowledge, Skills, Training and Competencies required for the post: Sound knowledge of Obstetrics and Gynaecology ultrasound.
  • Sound knowledge of general ultrasound scans.
  • Sound knowledge of Ultrasound procedures.
  • Knowledge of relevant Health and Safety policies, regulations and acts.
  • Sound report writing and administrative skills.
  • Knowledge of Quality Assurance procedure and methods.
  • Sound communication, interpersonal, problem solving, teaching and training skills.
  • Good interpersonal relations and ability to perform with a team.
  • Computer literacy.

Duties

  • Provide high quality ultrasound services consistent with scope of practice and clinical standards.
  • Provide high quality ultrasound services according to the patient’s needs.
  • To promote good health practices and ensure optimal patient care.
  • Execute all ultrasound procedure completely to prevent complications.
  • Provide general administrative duties as required.
  • Provide guidance and supervision to junior staff.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary team as part of medical and allied team.
  • Participate in institutional radiographic policy making and planning for service delivery.
  • Promote Batho Pele Principles in the execution of all duties for effective service delivery.
  • Give factual information to patients and clients on ultrasound examinations.
  • Participate in departmental Quality Assurance, Quality Improvement Programmes and National Core Standards.
  • Inspect and utilise equipment professionally to ensure that they comply with safety standards.
  • Develop protocols to ensure that sonographic services comply with the required prescripts.
  • Participate in ultrasound quality assurance programmes.
  • Participate in Continued Professional Development (CPD) programmes.
  • Compile report and memos as required in the working environment.
  • Assist with ultrasound patient booking.
  • Perform other duties as per delegation by radiography management.

Medical Registrars - Training will take place at various sites for each discipline. Registrars may be required to spend time at various training institutions as required by the discipline. The site for the 1st year of training and subsequent rotations will be determined by the Academic Head of Discipline. Applicants are requested to apply separately for the disciplines of their interest. A maximum of three applications will be allowed which should be ranked in order of preference. One application for various Disciplines will not be accepted. Applications from applicants who are already appointed in the Registrar Programme will not be considered. As per HPCSA Regulations, the duration of Registrar training is 4/5 years, depending on the Discipline. All Registrars will be expected to register with the university for the MMED at own expense. All Registrars will be required to sign a contract which includes training and service responsibilities. Registrars will be required to complete Performance Agreements and assessments as stipulated by the Department. Appointments are subject to the signing of a contract which includes a service pay-back period. All shortlisted candidates, including the SMS, shall undertake two pre-entry assessments.
