Overview

Professional nurse specialised in ophthalmic nursing required at Niemeyer Memorial Hospital Eye Clinic in KwaZulu-Natal, with a minimum of four years post-registration experience.

Requirements

  • Grade 1: Experience: A minimum of 4 years appropriate/recognisable experience in nursing after registration as Professional Nurse with SANC in General nursing.
  • Grade 2: Experience: A minimum of 4 years appropriate/recognisable experience in nursing after registration as Professional Nurse with SANC in General nursing.
  • At least 10 years of the period referred to above must be appropriate/recognisable experience after obtaining the one post Basic qualification in Ophthalmic Nursing.
  • STD 10 or grade12 Certificate.
  • Degree / Diploma in General Nursing or equivalent qualification that allows registration with SANC as a Professional Nurse.
  • One year Post Basic Registration Degree/Diploma in Ophthalmic nursing plus 4 years appropriate/recognisable registration experience as a general nurse.
  • Current registration with South African Nursing Council as a Professional Nurse Specialty (2026 SANC receipt).
  • Knowledge, Skills, Training and Competencies Require: Knowledge of nursing care processes and procedures, nursing statutes, and other relevant legal frameworks such as: Nursing Act, Health Act, Occupational Health & Safety Act, Patient Rights Charter, Batho-Pele principles.
  • Public Service Regulations, Labour Act, Disciplinary Code and Procedure, Grievance Procedure, etc.
  • Good communication skills; report writing skills; facilitation skills; coordination skills; liaison skills; networking skills; problem solving skills;
  • Information management; knowledge management; planning & organising; computer literacy.

Duties

  • Maintain a therapeutic relationship and environment in which health care can be provided optimally and safety.
  • Create and maintain a complete and accurate nursing record for individual health care users.
  • Participate in health promotion and illness prevention initiatives and contribute to their evaluation.
  • Maintain a plan to improve the quality of nursing and health care.
  • Implement quality improvement plan.
  • Maintain a professional and ethical as well as an enabling environment for ethical practice.
  • Protect and advocate right of patients regarding health care.
  • Diagnose and manage conditions related to eyes.
  • Implement patient care standards, policies and procedures.
  • Compliance and adherence to the relevant acts/prescript applicable within the nursing environment.
  • Apply the principles of nursing care in service rendering for the maintenance of professional excellence.
  • Implement nursing care management activities according to the Standard of Practice and Scope of Practice and act upon breaching of laws relating to nursing practice and professional code of conduct and practice standard.
  • Implement quality improvement plan, the Nursing Act and Regulations, the Code of Ethics and Professional Practice of the South African Nursing Council.
  • Implement procedure that maintain effective infection control and occupational and safety measures in accordance with Occupational Health and safety legislation.
  • Maintain accountability and responsibility for nursing care activities.

Medical Registrars - Training will take place at various sites for each discipline. Registrars may be required to spend time at various training institutions as required by the discipline. The site for the 1st year of training and subsequent rotations will be determined by the Academic Head of Discipline. As per HPCSA Regulations, the duration of Registrar training is 4/5 years, depending on the Discipline. All Registrars will be expected to register with the university for the MMED at own expense. All Registrars will be required to sign a contract which includes training and service responsibilities. Registrars will be required to complete Performance Agreements and assessments as stipulated by the Department. Appointments are subject to the signing of a contract which includes a service pay-back period. All shortlisted candidates, including the SMS, shall undertake two pre-entry assessments.
