Overview

Porter needed at the Western Cape Rehabilitation Centre to transport patients between wards and treatment areas, requiring physical fitness and basic literacy skills.

Requirements

  • Minimum requirement: Basic literacy and numeracy skills.
  • Experience: Appropriate experience as a porter in a health environment.
  • Inherent requirements of the job: Willingness to rotate within the wards and other departments when necessary.
  • Must be physically fit.
  • Ability to handle and lift heavy objects.
  • Act as a reliever for messenger when required.
  • Prepared to handle corpses (deceased bodies).
  • Competencies (knowledge/skills): Good communication skills.
  • Good interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge of infection PUBLIC prevention methods.
  • Ability to work independently and within a team.
  • Ability to work under pressure.

Duties

  • Accompany walking patients and transport sitting/non-walking patients per wheelchair or stretcher between wards and treatment areas.
  • Assist with the transfer of patients to beds/trolleys and vice versa.
  • Safe transporting of patients in and out of vehicles.
  • Respond to requests from wards, pharmacy or other departments regarding medical equipment or documentation.
  • Carry medical and other documentation (patient files, reports, etc.) to wards/treatment and other admin areas.
  • Change or assist in changing oxygen supply during patient transport when required.
  • Deliver specimens to laboratories and ensure a safe and hygienic work environment.
  • Ensure laboratory specimens and blood products are delivered within required timeframes and safety protocols.
